The problems of the lowest bidder concept
Or maybe they could’ve spent money to hire a better contractor for the New Residence Complex on campus. On top of having to deal with multiple fire alarms within the first week, the 197-person dorm now has a new problem: it has to be evacuated tonight.
Quoted from an intra-campus mail post by Anita Wihry, the director of Facilities Management:
“An anchor bolt that holds up a support for the steam system in the first floor corridor separated from the concrete deck to which it was attached. The weight of the steam pipes on the support caused the support to bend and some ceiling tiles to fall.”
So there are 197 students (well, less because it’s the weekend) who have to find another place to spend the night. Balentine is being remodelled, so I’m not really sure how that works out as far as having students there is concerned. Some RA’s have been telling students with extra space in their rooms that they might have to accept a roommate for an undisclosed amount of time. What a wonderful way to spend the weekend.
