Please, move on from MoveOn
Someone posted a message to one of the FirstClass conferences at school about a petition to send to congresspeople about the gay marriage amendment. The petition was run by every right winger’s favorite site – MoveOn.org. I know a lot of people who subscribe in some part to this site, often quoting from it, because a lot of my friends are, understandably, fairly liberal like I am (often more to the extreme). I also think it’s a great use for the Web to gather support and do some pseudo-grassrooting.
I sent this petition in, and I started getting e-mails from the founding members of MoveOn. I don’t really mind when sites send me e-mails without explicitly saying they’ll do so (*cough*), and I took some time and read what they had to say. In short, I was really disappointed; I felt sorry that one of the most popular and famous sites to support “my side” was so liberal and biased.
Sure, I understand that action groups have to be extreme. I just found it interesting that they called their latest campaign “United, not Divided” while they were in fact helping to fuel the division between sides. I just received an e-mail about their accomplishments over the last year, and I also watched their ad about Bush. Not only was it poorly done, but it was an attack ad. The other e-mail criticized Bush for attacking Kerry. They also attributed changes in polling to solely their advertising and campaigning. Please.
I’m a fairly moderate liberal, but I turn my head at any source that tries to polarize our country. Our government should be representative of our country as a whole, and our country right now is just about as half and half as it can be. I’d definitely support a Democratic-Republican ticket; hopefully that would be one way of standing for how our country stands at the present time.
