Talking from your behind
This one made me giggle.

Huh. I look forward to His speech at the Republican National Convention – I bet that’d be quite the endorsement.
Funny, since 52.7% of America is Christian.

I bought some bubbles from Rite Aid this morning for $1.29. It’s a huge (16 fl. oz.) bottle, and it even comes with a miracle wand.
“A miracle wand,” you ask? You might wonder if it cures the ills of people around the world or if it brings world peace. Maybe it lets blind people see.
But no, you’d be wrong. This miracle wand helps you blow bubbles.
I think the definition of “miracle” has been liberalized a bit over time.
An idea for a random trip to Burger King…
“Hi, umm, I got this crown… and I don’t know, there must’ve been some sort of mixup. See, I’m not the burger king.”
(inspired by Kate)
Being a college student and all, people sometimes ask me why I don’t drink. Sometimes I give them the simplest answer – I just don’t feel like it – but that’s not really the whole story.
See, I have this tendency to become addicted to things. It goes for a wide range of stuff (the Internet, message boards, collections…), but it’s usually true. It also, unfortunately, goes for games.
I went to the Sports Arena tonight with Matt and Sarah. We bowled some, and then Matt and I played a couple rounds of pool. After that, though, I ended up spending around $9 on games. I tend to like the creative ones; they have a “get the balls in the honey pot” one there and a Plinko clone and a bunch of Skee-Ball machines. When all was said and done, I walked out with a slip for around 200 tickets (though I’m sure the redemption machine ripped me off). I was surprised I could stop myself.
It was definitely fun, though.
For the next week or two I’ll be without my PowerBook. Those faint white spots everyone keeps talking about with the new 15″ G4′s have been bugging me for a little while, so I thought I’d get it fixed while it’s still under warranty. I’ll also have it back in time for school, which I’m definitely not complaining about.
Because of this, however, I won’t be on IM as much as I usually am, and my justinrussell.com/mainesites.net e-mail probably won’t get checked as much as it usually does. If you have to reach me, call my cell (now with that newfangled voice mail) or write to my UMaine e-mail. Thanks!
I went swimming yesterday in some Chlorine Goodness (I prefer non-pool water by far, but I’ll take what I can get lately).
Once I stopped to think about it, I don’t think I’ve really swam in probably 2 or 3 years. I almost forgot how to, actually, and I didn’t really move very fast. The only pool I’ve taken a dip in (or dived into) is really just a bunch of PHP and JS. That said, I was so excited to have the chance to go swimming. I’d been waiting all summer, but the apparent “keep Justin from swimming in summer 2004″ conspiracy* had been striking again and again until yesterday’s fortune.
I really don’t know who reads this blog, so let me give you a little background info for context’s sake. First off all, I was born in Rockport, Maine, just south of the coastal tourist hotspot of Camden. Every summer during my childhood I spent days in the ocean (yes, the freezing cold Maine ocean) swimming around with my grandmother. I had a couple of birthday parties at my town’s pool. Over time I had less chances to go swimming, but it remained one of my favorite forms of exercise along with hiking, biking, and kayaking (notice: all outdoor).
I noticed one thing when I went to bed last night: I felt more relaxed as I went to sleep than I had for a long, long time. We didn’t get to swim for long; it started to rain (we stayed in during that… I mean, I wasn’t exactly afraid of getting wet), but then it started thundering a bit and we left. The short amount of time I had in the pool calmed me down so much and just relaxed my body so much that I felt extremely comfortable when it came time to lay down. That’s a feeling I’ve missed; working on the computer all day in combination with not being so good at starting relaxing activities (reading, biking, yoga, etc.) has really gotten to me.
That said, I want to go swimming again. I want to make it a regular thing. Heck, I think I might even try out the pool at UMaine. There aren’t a lot of things that can make me feel as good as it does.
* There were at least 3 or 4 times this summer that I had made plans to go swimming. For whatever reason – lack of interest, other things coming up, the weather – each time ended in disappointment. Getting in the pool yesterday was just what I needed.

If the guy wasn’t wearing his helmet, wouldn’t this make a great Jedi training logo?
One of the things I really like about iChat that I can’t seem to find on other AIM clients (AIM itself, Trillian, Adium, etc.) is the ability to have status messages. Not away messages… status messages. Messages that would appear while you’re online. Sure, you could put something in your profile, but there is no real notification that there’s a specific message. Take, for example, if I wanted to say “I’m bored, lemme know if you want to do something!” or “I’ll be going to the Union at 10 to see the concert if anyone wants to come.” You don’t really want to put an away message up, because you’re actually at the computer… these would just come on as little notes while you’re available online. Yahoo has these built in, and it’s really too bad that AIM doesn’t.
